Lady Lamplighter Death Doula

What a Death Doula Does

We provide non-medical support for individuals and families facing the end of life.

My role is to bring comfort, education, and presence so that dying can be met with dignity, clarity, and love. I walk alongside both the dying and their loved ones, offering guidance through uncertainty, companionship through loneliness, and reassurance in moments that can feel overwhelming. My purpose is not to take over, but to hold a lantern of light — helping families feel supported, informed, and less alone on this sacred journey.

Emotional, Spiritual, and Practical Support

A death doula is a steady companion during one of life’s most vulnerable times. We provide a calm, non-judgmental presence, listening with compassion and holding space for the full range of emotions—fear, grief, love, and even laughter. This support can include guided relaxation, ceremony, or ritual (if desired), or simply sitting quietly so no one feels alone.

Education About the Natural Process of Dying

Much of the fear around death comes from not knowing what to expect. We help families understand the natural biological changes that occur as the body prepares to die. From shifts in breathing to changes in appetite or consciousness, I explain what is happening in gentle, clear language. This knowledge reduces fear and helps families recognize these changes as normal parts of the dying process.

Rituals and Vigil Support

Rituals can bring comfort, meaning, and connection at the end of life. We help families create personalized vigils—whether that means reading poetry, playing favorite music, lighting candles, or offering blessings. These moments honor the life being lived and allow family members to participate in the care of their loved one with reverence and love. I create and bless ceremonies and rituals for those wanting to connect with their loved one in a new way.

Legal Documentation, Advance Care Planning, and End-of-Life Wishes

Clarity is a gift at the end of life. we guide individuals and families in exploring their values and documenting their preferences—such as advance directives, funeral wishes, or legacy projects. I discuss the legalities of dying such as Power of Attorney, naming an Agent under a Personal Directive, MAiD, Executor, ensuring legal wills are in place and assist in organizing these for your estate and legacy. There are many different after death body care options that go beyond embalming and cremation and I can support choices and values by reviewing the dynamics of each. Having an after-care plan ensures that your body is cared for a placed in a manner that suits your values.  Having these conversations early helps reduce stress later, ensuring the person’s voice is honoured when decisions must be made.

Early Grief & Remembrance

Support doesn’t end when death occurs. I walk with families into the early hours of grief—helping with gentle support, assisting with first rituals, and offering space for tears, silence, or storytelling. This early guidance helps families move through the first moments of loss with dignity and love.
